INTERVIEW

Sasha Valarino talks the chop with Renya Xydis

MODEL

AGENCY: Priscilla’s
HAIR BY: Renya Xydis and Ashleigh Croker

HOMETOWN: Orange County, California

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SYDNEY:

Everyone is so relaxed, chilled and open! I also love how there are different vibes for every area. Bondi is more surf/ skate, Newtown is more like San Francisco. There’s a place for whatever mood you’re in and a lot to explore. Also the beaches are just insanely beautiful.

WHAT IS A HAIR TIP YOU CAN SHARE WITH US:

Try to work with what you have rather than against it. Less is more!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WANTING TO CHANGE UP YOUR HAIR:

I started itching for some sort of a change about 5 months ago – but I didn’t take the idea of going short seriously until I arrived in Sydney.

HOW DID YOU MAKE THE DECISION TO GO FOR THE CHOP:

My agent was really the one who came up with the idea. I think everyone at the time agreed that my hair didn’t suit me or my personal style. So, they put together some references and ideas of what might look best and Renya just kind of put them all together and turned it out.

HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU WERE MID-CUT:

It felt like I was being unwrapped or something! I thought I would get nervous but it actually felt so good. After the first big snip I couldn’t stop smiling, I finally felt like me!

WHY VALONZ:

My agents wanted to make sure I had a really good hair cutter do it, so they chose Renya at Valonz. I’m glad they did because it was such an awesome salon and everyone seemed really talented and like they really enjoyed what they did.

HOW IS THE INDUSTRY SEEING THIS NEW LOOK:

I’ve gotten so many positive responses. One client told me it was the best decision we could have made. Overall, industry people and my friend seem to be really into it!

WHAT IS YOUR NEW HAIR ROUTINE:

A bit of texturiser and a good head shake!

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BE NEW AND MODERN IN THE MODELLING WORLD:

It’s really important to be open to change and up-to-date, not only in modelling but in any creative field. Personal reinvention is so powerful and contagious.
